Councils Objectives

Council’s Objectives as per the law establishing it.

1. To represent the interests of consumers by making submissions to, providing views and information to and consulting with the Authority, Minister and Sector Ministers.

2. To receive and disseminate information and views on matters of interests to consumers of regulated goods and services,

3. To establish regional and sector consumer committees and consult with them,

4. To consult with industry, government and other consumer groups on matters of interests to consumers of regulated goods and services

5. To establish local and sector consumer committees and consult with them.

The Council in its five year strategic Plan 2011-2016 highlighted five Specific Objectives which the Council has to implement in the period of five years;

1. Public Awareness on Transport Consumer Rights and Obligation. This intends to increase Consumers’ responsibility in making service providers responsible for goods and services in the market. It is done through workshops and seminars with consumergroups.

2. Comprehensive Standards on User – Friendly Transport Services and Infrastructure.This aims at advocating and lobbying for improvement in transport accessibility, safety and comfort.

3. Establishment of Consumer Protection Mechanisms in the Country. This is done through lobbying and advocacy aiming at the adoption and implementation of the National Consumer Protection Policy and latter Consumer Protection Law. Apparently we are finalizing the Policy which will be submitted to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Marketing for further steps as he may find it necessary.

4. Improvement of Consumer Redress System in the Country. We are going through various
laws of the land which provide for consumer rights reviewing redress mechanisms
provided by those pieces of legislation critically.

5. Enhancing Council’s Delivery Capacity.

The on-going programs are;

1.Conducting Regional Sensitization Seminars/ Workshops on consumer rights and obligations. This goes hand in hand with distributing printed publicity materials on consumer rights and obligations to the general public

2.Preparation and publishing Consumer Voice News letter

3.Students consumer clubs in 6 regions

4.Lobby and advocacy for adoption and implementation of the National Consumer Protection Policy

5.Carrying out capacity building for 6 Regional Consumer Committee

6.Undertaking study/research on critical consumer issues in the country.
